Here we talk about legendary soccer captains. You can read about Pele, Maradona, Totti, Maldini and many others. Now we’ll tell you about Eusebio soccer achievements.
Eusébio was born in Mozambique in the city of Lourenço Marques (after Mozambique ceased to be a Portuguese colony, the town was renamed in Maputo). Initially he played in a local club called “Sporting Lourenço – Marques”. The funniest thing about Eusebio sport achievements is that the most famous Portuguese soccer player in the history was not the Portuguese. He was born and raised in Mozambique, which at that time was still a Portuguese colony. He was the first black player of the continent that gained the worldwide fame. The top Portuguese clubs such as Benfica Sporting and Porto provided financial assistance to the
Mozambique and Angola teams and the most prominent local players were taken to Portugal where they played both in Portugal local and strongest clubs.
Eusebio sport biography is rather interesting. By coincidence, he was grown not by Benfica but by its old and the chief opponent – “Sporting” that was another strong soccer club in Portugal. But when Eusebio was called for a trial show in Lisbon in 1961 the leadership of Benfica “stole” a player off the plane and hid it until passions had died down and Sporting spent an interest in it. During these years, the coach of Benfica, was a veteran of the Hungarian Football – Guttman. Guttman always highly respected African soccer, and the backbone of the Portuguese team that won the European Cup that were Africans. But the greatest of them was, no doubt, Eusebio. Eusebio cup games were perfect. In 1965 Eusebio was the best footballer in Europe.
At the World Championships in 1966 Portugal squad reached the semifinals, but there were eventual winners of this tournament – the British with the score 1:2. However, the Portuguese managed to win with 2:1 the USSR team in the match to get the third place. And Eusebio scored nine goals, thus he became the best scorer of the tournament. Eusebio became the leading scorer in the Portugal championships for 7 times. In 1969 Eusebio left Benfica to play in other Portuguese clubs such as “Tomar” and “Beira – Mar”. But he was invited by soccer clubs in North America: USA, Canada, Mexico. Eusebio played in such US clubs as Rhode Island – “Oushners “, Las Vegas – “Quicksilver”, the New Jersey “Americans”, Boston “Minuteman”, Canada Totonto “Kroatsiya”.
After football career he became a commentator.
